Equestrian Surfaces
Chris Watson and Sons have recently started shredding tyres to produce 'crumb rubber', which has a variety of uses including surfacing for horse tracks and playgrounds. It helps to prevent slips and falls and is a brilliant shock absorber.
Shredded rubber is commonly used as 'footing' in training rinks and arenas. When mixed with sand, the rubber creates a soft but firm surface that reduces ruts and controls dust. This surface is easy to maintain, it just takes a small amount of raking very occasionally- to keep the surface even.
Tyres are shredded into small pieces before a magnet removes the wire, and the rubber is sorted into four grades by a series of magnets and rollers according to how pure the rubber is. Only the cleanest rubber (99.9% wire free) is sold, leaving the rest to be re-shredded, or to be used for other applications.
Recycling tyres in this way is extremely beneficial for the environment, as tyres are non-biodegradable, and have previously been sent to land fills where they will sit for many centuries to come- a severe fire hazard, and no good for the environment.
Rubber is available in bulk at £50 per tonne, with the delivery fee dependant on travelling distance.
